3/30/2023 0 Comments Best time to golf bandon dunes![]() ![]() (If you go to the Arcade in downtown Bandon, there’s a good chance you’ll find your caddie knocking back a few). And there really are local sights: beaches, time-capsule seafood shacks, a cool chocolate shop, and plenty of bars. Since Bandon itself runs an efficient shuttle service on the property, you don’t really need a car once you’re there - unless you’re bent on getting off the grounds to see the local sights and aren’t too tired or tipsy to do so. We paid $65 round-trip (not including tip) this last time around. Renting a car from there is easy enough, but there are also private shuttle services that will take you to and from the airport. And if you’re up for the alternate adventure of a connecting flight on a small plane to a small airport, you can fly to North Bend, Ore., which is only about 35 minutes from the resort. ![]() ![]() Sens: Another option is to fly to Eugene, Ore., and drive about two-and-half hours. Any travel tips for golfers making the pilgrimage from far or near? Getting to Bandon - a four-plus-hour drive south of Portland - is part of the adventure. Here’s the skinny on their trip, with the intent of informing you for your own Bandon adventure. The rest of the itinerary looked like this: Monday - Bandon and Pac Dunes. Upon arrival Sunday evening the squad squeezed in a hole and a half on Bandon Dunes before darkness set in. All tracks are walking-only caddies are optional. There’s also a putting course called the Punchbowl. For the uninitiated, Bandon has five courses: Bandon Dunes (David McLay Kidd), Pacific Dunes (Tom Doak), Bandon Trails (Bill Coore & Ben Crenshaw), Old Macdonald (Doak and Jim Urbina), and a 13-hole par-3 course, The Preserve (Coore & Crenshaw). I cannot even put into words how great the courses are, and the overall experience at the resort is as good as customer service gets.Early last week writers Josh Sens, Alan Bastable and Josh Berhow descended upon Bandon Dunes, the sprawling golf resort on the southern Oregon coast, for a three-day, 86-hole golfapalooza. I have gotten there every possible way you can. It’s not very easy to get to Bandon from here, and getting home is even harder. I see you are from Dallas, and I live in Plano. I hear in the summer when it is warmer, there is more wind. Only downside is daylight savings time makes it difficult to get in two rounds In a day. Not quite as many people at the resort and you get some good weather. But that was one day out of 20plus rounds over the years. It actually started sleeting too, with gusts over 30mph. One year we had a round with rain and winds up to “gale force.” That was the hardest round of golf I have ever played. And again, it makes you feel like you are playing in a British Open. Very rarely has it rained for an entire round and if you have good rain gear and use rain gloves, it’s not a big deal. You should be prepared for rain but it seems to move through very quickly when it does rain. And the other 2 days are the typical weather as noted above. Our trip is three days and it seems like we get one day of great weather, sometimes almost no wind. ![]() I actually like the typical weather as it seems fitting for seaside links golf. Very heavy sea level air so I lose at least a club in distance. But predominantly, temps are in the 50s for our trip, with wind around 10-15mph. The temperatures may be as low as high 40s on the morning, and it has been as warm as mid 60s on some trips. I hear the worst weather is in December/January, which is when room rates and green fees are the lowest. My trip is the first week of November every year, so we get the benefit of pretty good weather. It may be snowing and 30 in Portland but Bandon is usually in the 40's or low 50's with light rain when that happens.Īpologies for the delayed response. Flying into Portland I have run into snow along the freeway but you get out of it once you get near the coastline. It's hard to beat the super low prices during the late Nov to Jan timeframe. Plan for rain and it makes the pretty days even better. I just approach it as part of the scottish charm. We have had rounds where we have put it on and taken it off 3 or 4 times. Typically have at least one day where the rain gear gets used. We have seen early morning frost delays but also afternoons where we had to peel off layers to regular shirts. I have never been when it rained all day, every day but that could happen. You don't get the super strong winds you get from the summer but probably more rain. The weather has been pretty much the same every time. I have also been in January and February. Jerry, in case you don't get a answer about November, I have gone on Thanksgiving weekend but usually early to mid December. ![]()
